Long-haul flights go one of two ways: you spend the whole trip staring at the clock, or you get so comfy the hours just disappear. AA35 from Dallas/Fort Worth to Auckland was definitely the second one. I booked the Flagship Suite for just 83,000 AAdvantage miles, slept for over six hours, and had free Wi-Fi the entire way. The seat and the redemption value were the big wins for me.
Was everything perfect? Nope. The food was a step up from some of my past American business-class flights, but it wasn’t going to knock my socks off, and a few little things felt off for a premium cabin. Still, between the great sleep and what I got for my miles, I’d happily take this flight again.
Booking & Redemption Value 9.5/10
83,000 miles for a Flagship Suite: how good was the value?
I used 83,000 AAdvantage miles for this one-way flight from DFW to Auckland in American’s Flagship Suite. I’m a big believer in using miles where the extra comfort matters most, and crossing the Pacific is exactly that. The real win isn’t just the lie-flat seat… it’s actually landing rested enough to enjoy where you’re going.
For some context on cash prices, American was showing DFW to AKL Business/First round trips for $7,945 (January 26 to February 9, 2027) and $8,161 (November 25 to December 2, 2026). That’s about $8,000 round trip. Those are fares for other dates, not what my exact one-way seat would’ve cost, and one-way tickets can price differently.
To get a rough one-way number, take half of those round trips: about $3,973 to $4,081. Divide that by my 83,000 miles, multiply by 100, and you get roughly 4.8 to 4.9 cents per mile (or cents per point), before award taxes and fees. That’s an awesome redemption! For an exact number you’d need the cash fare for the same one-way flight, plus the taxes and fees I paid on the award.

Boarding & First Impressions 9.7/10
Smooth boarding and plenty of breathing room
Boarding was smooth and thankfully uneventful, exactly what you want before a long overnight flight. The flight was also pretty empty, which I love. A quieter cabin just makes everything calmer, especially when sleep is my number one priority.
The purser came by to introduce themselves, which was a nice personal touch. As for the Flagship Suite itself, I’ve flown British Airways’ newer Club Suite, and American’s version felt really familiar right away. Same privacy-focused layout, same general feel, not some huge leap forward. Not a bad thing at all, BA has a great suite… it just meant I was more “nice, solid product” than blown away.

Seat Comfort & Sleep 9.3/10
The fitted mattress pad was the MVP
For me, the real test of a long-haul business seat isn’t how fancy it looks when you board, it’s whether I can actually fall asleep in it. On AA35 I got over six hours of pretty comfortable sleep, which is a huge win on a flight this long.
One thing I really liked was the fitted mattress pad. Instead of just laying loose on top, it wrapped around the seat once it was set up as a bed. Sounds small, but it made the bed feel way more secure and put together. More airlines should do this!
A slightly snug footwell
My main complaint was the footwell. It felt a little small, and it was the one spot where the suite wasn’t as roomy as I’d like. At 6’2”, I notice these things, especially when I’m trying to stretch out. It didn’t ruin my sleep (clearly, I slept six-plus hours), but taller travelers should know.

Cabin Presentation & Amenities 8.5/10
Good comforts, a few odd details
They handed out pajamas, which I really appreciated on an overnight flight. I love little comforts like that… they make it so much easier to go from dinner to actually getting some rest.
The suite itself was comfortable, but I did spot a tiny fox sticker someone before me had left on the suite wall. Haha, it was actually pretty cute, a funny little surprise in a premium cabin. Not a problem at all, it honestly made me smile.

The water bottle showed up… just a little late
At first I thought there was no bottled water at the seat. Turns out I got one later in the flight, so it was more of a timing thing than a missing amenity. I’d still rather have water waiting at the seat from the start, especially before a long flight.
Crew Service 8/10
Nice touches throughout the flight
Crew service was good overall: a friendly intro from the purser, hot towels, and some nice touches during the meal. It was comfortable, not super polished, which is why I land at an 8/10. The crew took care of the basics and made the flight pleasant, even if it wasn’t especially memorable.
Food & Beverage 8/10
Better than past American flights, but not a showstopper
The food and drinks were better than on some of my past American business-class flights, but nothing about the main meal knocked my socks off. I did appreciate the basics being done right: hot towels, warm nuts (actually warm!), and hot bread. Little things like that make a premium meal feel complete.
With the salad, they asked if I wanted creamy ranch or balsamic vinaigrette. Not exactly groundbreaking, but I liked having the choice. Overall the food and service were solid and enjoyable, just not something I’d be raving about for weeks.

The smoothie stole the show at breakfast
One thing I WILL rave about: the banana and peach smoothie. Delicious! Refreshing, full of flavor, and easily the best thing I ate or drank the whole flight. After six-plus hours of sleep, it was exactly what I wanted before landing.
I also really liked the fruit plate with granola and a croissant, a great way to start the day before landing in New Zealand. Still, I’d give the food and drinks an 8/10: better than some of my past American business-class meals, with an awesome smoothie, but not an unforgettable meal overall.

Cabin Environment & Climate 8.9/10
Personal air vents: thank you!
Personal air vents earned points from me right away. I’d much rather control the airflow around my seat than rely on whatever temperature the cabin is set to. Such a simple thing, but it makes a real difference on a long flight, especially when you’re trying to sleep.

The lights stayed on during takeoff
One thing that was a little unusual: the cabin lights stayed on during takeoff. It didn’t really affect the rest of the flight, but I noticed because I’m used to the cabin being dimmed for departure. Small thing in an otherwise comfortable cabin.
Wi-Fi & Connectivity 9/10
Free for the whole flight… not Starlink-fast, but yay!
Free Wi-Fi the entire flight was a huge win. On a long flight across the Pacific, not having to decide whether an expensive Wi-Fi package is worth it is fantastic. I love when airlines just make it easy, and this was one of the most useful perks on AA35.
My speed test came back at about 55 Mbps download and just 1 Mbps upload. The download was totally workable, but the upload was pretty limited… definitely not Starlink speeds. Still, it worked the whole flight and it was free, yay! That’s a 9/10 from me, with the missing point mostly down to that slow upload.

Lavatory Experience 7/10
Missing the premium-cabin extras
The lavatory is where this product could use the most love. There were no extra amenities set out when I checked. I don’t need a whole spa in the sky, but some nice toiletries would’ve gone a long way for a “Flagship Suite.” For me, that’s a 7/10.
It’s a smaller part of the trip than the seat, crew or food, but it matters on a flight this long. When the suite is this comfortable, a basic lavatory stands out even more.

Miscellaneous Items
What stood out most?
What I’ll remember: six-plus hours of sleep, the fitted mattress pad, that delicious banana-and-peach smoothie, and free Wi-Fi. The pajamas and personal air vents were nice too. The food wasn’t amazing, but the comfort was excellent.
Would I book the same cabin again?
Yes. After flying British Airways Club Suite, American’s Flagship Suite felt familiar, and just as good for an overnight flight. The snug footwell and basic lavatory didn’t change how well I slept.
Would I book it on points again?
Absolutely. At 83,000 miles, this was a great redemption. Using half of the published round-trip fares, it works out to about 4.8 to 4.9 cents per mile before award taxes. Not an exact same-day comparison, but still a great deal.
Final Verdict
AA35 nailed the basics: a comfortable Flagship Suite, six-plus hours of sleep, fitted bedding, personal air vents, and free Wi-Fi the whole way. The food beat some of my past American business-class meals, and that banana-and-peach smoothie was the best part. At 83,000 miles, I’d happily book it again.
It wasn’t perfect. The suite felt familiar after British Airways Club Suite, the footwell was snug, and the lavatory was missing the premium extras (though that little fox sticker was a cute surprise, haha). Good-but-not-amazing food and slow Wi-Fi uploads also kept this at 8.7/10. Still, a comfortable flight and a great redemption.
